PGDBA 2020 Entrance Exam was held on 16th February, 2020 from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This is the first time that the entrance has been conducted online rather than offline. The pattern has remained almost similar as compared to the previous years’ although with a slight variation in some of the sections. Let’s have a look at the detailed analysis of the PGDBA 2020 entrance exam below:

Verbal Section:

Question Type

Number of Questions

Identify Incorrect Sentence

2

Jumbled Sentences

3

Reading Comprehension

10

Total

15

The pattern of the questions in the verbal section of PGDBA 2020 is the same w.r.t PGDBA 2019. (Check here for past years’ question analysis on verbal section). Two Reading Comprehension passages were given with 5 questions each. The questions were a typical mix of logical and subjective type which are generally expected. Jumbled sentences (or Parajumbles) were pretty straightforward. And talking about the Incorrect Sentence section, one of the questions had unexpectedly pretty difficult options which is unusual looking at the past PGDBA papers.

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation & Data Visualization Section:

Question Type

Number of Questions

Logical Reasoning

5

Data Interpretation and Data Visualization

5

Total

10

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation section each had 5 questions. Logical Reasoning section had one problem statement followed by a set of 5 questions. This was a typical logical problem that could be solved by grids.

About the Data Interpretation & Data Visualization section, there are couple of controversies surrounding this section. Some candidates have got data interpretation questions whereas some have got quantitative aptitude questions in this section. In some cases, the options to the questions provided are unrelated. We are still awaiting for an official word from the PGDBA Authorities regarding the mix-up.

Quantitative Aptitude Section:

Question Type

Number of Questions

Algebra (5)

             Binomial Theorem

1

             Quadratic Equations

2

             Sequence and Series

2

Calculus (8)

            Area under the curve

1

        Continuity & Differentiability

1

            Definite Integral

2

            Matrices

1

            Minima

2

           System of Linear Equations

1

Coordinate Geometry (3)

            Circle

1

            Ellipse

1

            Hyperbola

1

Geometry (2)

            Triangles

2

Sets, Relations and Functions (7)

            Functions

3

            Sets

1

            Trigonometric Identities

3

Total

25

The quantitative aptitude section has a similar pattern of questions as in previous years. ( Check here for past years’ question analysis on quantitative aptitude section) Algebra had questions on almost all topics – binomial theorem, geometric progression, series and sequence. There were no questions asked on Combinatorics (Permutation and Combination).

Calculus had a typical mix of questions from matrices, determinants, system of linear equations, continuity & differentiability, extremum and area under the curves.

Co-ordinate geometry had a couple of formula based and conceptual questions around circle, hyperbola and ellipse.

Trigonometry section had a deviation from previous years’ patterns. There were a total of 5 questions from trigonometry – 2 questions on triangles and 3 questions of trigonometric identities.

Apart from the above, there were the usual questions on sets and functions.

There is very limited information available about PGDBA statistics such as cut-off, number of test takers, composition of overall score and other things. In this post, we have tried to consolidate the important information and give you further details about the course.

Please note that this information has been consolidated from various sources (discussion with PGDBA aspirants and students; social media posts made by students/aspirants; RTIs filed over the years; and off course you should not forget that we have been there and done that and we are the only ones in the industry who can answer those questions.)

According to our sources, around 7,000 people applied for the PGDBA entrance exam 2019; however, only 4,500 took the test. This could be due to multiple factors such as students opting out of process (post CAT results declaration), rejection of application by PGDBA admission committee due to incomplete/incorrect information, among other reasons.

We have encountered this question quite often in the last few days, so we thought of writing a detailed post on this. Remember: profile building for PGDBA is also very important part of your overall admission preparation. Though it may not have a direct impact in your selection, it does play an important role in your overall success as a data scientist.

For cracking entrance exam of PGDBA (Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics) by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur, the first and most important aspect is written test. Assuming you have prepared well for the written exam (If you need any help on PGDBA 2023 written exam preparation, check out this post) and you want to develop your profile for the overall admission process, we have a four step approach for you.

Profile Building for PGDBA

Read and Think Analytics

Read and study as much as possible on analytics. You may set up Google alerts on common terms or follow/subscribe any website which posts latest news and information on analytics and data science.

The idea for this activity is to understand different aspects of analytics, learn how companies use analytics in their day to day business operations and activities, and learn about the overall evolution of the industry.

This will help you in developing your thought process and mindset to appreciate the applications and use cases of analytics.

Study and Learn Analytics

Study various analytics concepts and complete a few online courses. The topics that you can choose are as below:

Statistics

SQL

R/Python

Tableau/Qlikview

Learn the basics of statistics and understand common terminologies and concepts in statistics. In terms of programming language, you may pick up either R or Python. Though Python has recently gained more attention, you may pick up either to develop your understanding. To understand visualization, learn one of the tools – Tableau or Qlikview. This will help in building your thought process for descriptive analytics – most widely used in the industry. Moreover, this will teach you how to look at data from different angles and how to make sense of it.

These topics will help you develop a strong foundation when you enter PGDBA or any other analytics course. If you want to get a certificate, consider the courses that offer a certificate at a low cost.

Practice and Showcase Analytics

Try a few hands-on projects/problems that you can talk about during your interview. These projects will give you a good hands-on experience to talk to anyone while discussing your interest and knowledge about analytics/data science. We have listed a number of projects on our website. You may pick up any one project depending on your choice of industry (Retail / Banking and Financial Services / Operations and Supply Chain / Restaurant Analytics). If you want additional ideas on projects, do let us know. We can help you identify the right project for you. You may also share your ideas in the comments section.

You may showcase these projects on your LinkedIn/Github profile or publish them on a blog. If you wish to showcase your article on AI Monks, we would be happy to help you.

Compete and Win Analytics

Participate in competitions – If you think you have gained adequate knowledge, you may take part in competitions and test your skills. If you get a good rank, you may show that in your CV. The most popular website to participate in data science competitions is Kaggle.

Even if you don’t plan to pursue academics in analytics but learn for yourself, these are the four main areas that you should focus. Please share your analytics journey in the comments section, we would be happy to learn from your experiences.

Every year, the quant section of the entrance exam has 25 questions out of a total of 50 questions. The topics are based out of class XI and class XII Mathematics. About 37% of questions are based on Calculus – the majority of them around continuity/differentiability, application of derivatives and integrals, limits and determinants. About 23% of questions are related to Algebra – Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Permutation Combination and Series. Coordinate geometry and geometry account for 20% of questions – covering circles, locus of a point, distances, equation of conic sections, formula related to triangles. Other topics include sets, functions, relations and functions and they cover the remainder of the section.

A single question might test you on multiple topics and is necessarily not limited to just a single topic. The above categorization is only indicative of the pattern of Quant section and aims to help you prepare for the entrance accordingly in conjunction with Verbal, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation.

The top 3 categories are Calculus, Algebra and Co-ordinate geometry which together comprises almost 70-80% of the quant section every time. This should be the starting point of preparation and the remaining topics can be covered in succession. Though Numbers aren’t covered as part of NCERT syllabus, a few questions in this category can be expected as can be seen in 2019. Do watch out for PGDBA 2021 Test Series + Preparation Package for more info.

If this question has intrigued you, it means you have decided to take the leap of faith and give your shot at Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics, jointly offered by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur. Before coming to the PGDBA strategy, I will categorize PGDBA aspirants into two different categories:

The first category – this category of students is preparing for CAT (as their first focus) or any other entrance exam for management courses

The second category – this category of students has not prepared for CAT; hence, they are starting their preparation from scratch.

There is a slight difference in the PGDBA 2021 strategy for the above two categories; hence, I am covering them separately.

Let’s talk about the first category.

If you are preparing for CAT, my assumption is that you already have prepared for Verbal, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation sections pretty well. Since these sections are almost same for both the exams (rather, I find PGDBA difficulty level for such questions lower than CAT.), you don’t need to prepare too much in addition to what you are preparing for CAT. The verbal section of PGDBA is essentially a subset of the verbal section of the CAT exam. Logical reasoning and data interpretation are more or less same, with PGDBA having a lower difficulty level.

Now, coming on to the Quant section – there exists a good difference in the syllabus for both the exams. Key additional topics in the PGDBA quant syllabus are functions, limits, continuity, derivative, maxima & minima, methods of integration, evaluation of areas using integration, conic sections, matrices and determinants, among few others. So, if you are preparing for CAT exam, you would not have covered these topics. My suggestion to you guys would be to focus on CAT exam right now and give your best shot. Once you are done with the CAT exam, you would have 2-3 months (mid-November to mid-February) to prepare for these additional topics. Focus on these additional topics during that time and revise/brush up other topics before the exam.

Now, let’s talk about the second category that is not preparing for CAT, but is focusing on PGDBA.

You guys need to pull up your socks and start preparation right away. You need to focus on 3 sections for the exam:

Verbal

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation

Quantitative Aptitude

Let’s talk about each of the sections one by one.

Verbal

In the past four years of examination, there have been five different types of questions which have been asked. The breakup of these five question-types has been given in the below table.

Looking at the trend of questions asked, it is fair to assume that the admission committee will continue with reading comprehension and jumbled sentences. The other 2 question types (Identify Incorrect Sentence and Incorrect Word Usage) are more based on grammatical usage of words.

Though there is no fixed number of questions or passages that you should prepare, we believe you should aim to practice the bare minimum of 15-20 reading comprehension passages and 20-25 questions of other types, each. If you have time to practice more questions, please do.

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation

Though most of the times this section has consisted of a set of 5 logical reasoning questions and one set of 5 data interpretation questions, 2018 showed a slight deviation in the trend for logical reasoning questions. The admission committee might play with this section and a variety of questions by breaking one set of 5 questions into 2-3 sets of 2 or 3 questions each.

We would suggest you practice at least 15-20 sets of each of logical reasoning and data interpretation for the exam. If you have time to practice more questions, please do.

Quantitative Aptitude

This is the most important section for all the aspirants since this forms 50 per cent of the overall exam score. Quite a few of the topics covered in this section are not part of any other management course entrance exam, so both categories of aspirants should focus on this equally.

You can also get detailed insights and analysis on how to go about developing a PGDBA 2021 strategy for the quant section.

In case you have not been in touch with mathematics for a long time, we suggest you begin with class 11/12 NCERT books, and revise your basic concepts and practice a few questions. Once you are done with NCERT books and feel confident about the concepts and your understanding, you should move to difficult questions.

For the topics that are also a part of the CAT syllabus (such as combinatorics, algebra, basic geometry, linear equations, quadratic equations, among others), you may pick up any CAT preparation book and practice questions from there. For the topics that are not a part of CAT syllabus, you may pick up class 11/12 mathematics reference books such as RD Sharma or others. Additionally, you may pick up IIT JEE entrance exam preparation books and practice questions from there.

There’s no specific number of questions as to how much you should practice. Whatever time you have till the written exam, practice enough so that you don’t feel that you should have practised harder later on.
