The MTech in AI program by IISc, Bangalore, is a brand new, two-year full-time regular classroom course. The program aims to fill the gap in high-end AI scientists & engineers’ availability and fill the industry’s critical needs.
Artificial Intelligence has captivated the entire world with its ability to solve complex societal problems of our times. The Government of India has initiated a widespread discussion on how India should strive to be among the world’s top nations in the AI ecosystem.
The M.Tech. (AI) the program aims to impart rigorous training in the understanding and application of AI to produce graduates who can become world leaders in AI. The Division of EECS offers this program through the joint efforts of the Departments of CSA, ECE, EE, and ESE.
About the program
The MTech in AI program by IISc, Bangalore, is a two-year program jointly offered by the Division of Electrical, Electronics & Computer Sciences. The institute has tailored the curriculum to bring students to the forefront of AI R&D. More than thirty faculty members working in leading-edge topics in AI design and administer the program. The program has mandated a One year R&D project to enable the students to create futuristic AI applications. Students are encouraged to emphasize on patents, products, software, and publications. Since IISc is a research institute, students get easy access to State-of-the-art computational & experimental facilities.
Furthermore, the students get great placement opportunities in reputed companies, and industrial research labs to pursue high end, deep technology aspects of AI.
Curriculum
Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Graphics, Stochastic Systems, Computer Vision, Multimedia, Real-Time & Fault-Tolerant Systems, E-Commerce, Speech Processing, Sensor Networks, Real-Time Signal Processing, Embedded Systems, and Digital Signal Processing.

Fee
Students have to pay a fee of INR43400 for the MTech in AI from IISc. The amount covers the tuition, gymkhana, another academic fee, and students emergency fund. Also, a refundable amount of library deposit and statutory deposit is a part of the fee, as mentioned above.
Stipend
Students pursuing the MTech in AI course from IISc get a stipend of INR 12000.
Admission Process
- The applicants must have a valid GATE score in CS, EC, or EE papers to apply.
- The institute shall call the CS, EC, and EE GATE disciplines applicants for the interview based on their GATE scores.
- The number of students to be called will be approximately six times the number of seats.
- This will determine the GATE cut off scores. The institute shall conduct interviews on April 13-15, 2020.
- The interview will be on the basics of programming, engineering maths, and applicant’s GATE subject area.
- Due to the ongoing global pandemic, COVID-19, the revised Admission Criteria for 2020-21=100% GATE.
- No interviews are being conducted this year
- As this is a new program, IISc won’t take sponsored candidates for 2020-21 admissions.
Eligibility
- GATE.
- BE/ B Tech or equivalent degree (with a GATE Paper in CS, EE, EC).
- Candidates should have done a formal course in programming in C and C++.
Admissions Dates
Students can start applying for the 2020-21 session as the admission portals are open.
The deadline for submitting an online application is 23:59 IST on 23 March 2020 for Indian and Overseas Citizen of India applicants, whereas it is 23:59 IST on 10 March 2020 for the International Applicants.

Classes Commencement
The students are expected to join IISc by the last week of July, and the classes commence during the first week of August.
The Semester start dates are variable, but the tentative start maybe on 15 September.
Summer Internships
IISc is a research institute, and it has mandated internships as a part of the curriculum. The students have to start their research following the second semester, during May, June, and July. The project may involve an internship in the industry, mostly if the work is aligned with your project topic. Alternatively, the institute gives you the flexibility to work at IISc itself with your project advisor.
Research
Students have to prepare a dissertation as a part of the M.Tech. The program, which emphasizes innovation & research. The program allows you to pursue research-oriented project work and publish papers in reputed international conferences & journals.
The Artificial Intelligence Group at IISc is a group of students and faculty members who share interests in the broad areas of AI, Data Science & ML. The faculty members engage in cutting-edge research on various topics such as theoretical foundations, new algorithms, architectures, and other applications. Highly motivated Doctoral and Masters’ research students complement and expand the energy of the faculty members. The group has initiated partnerships with a host of global industries and industrial research laboratories.
