There are no tuition fees charged in the summer semester since it is the period of working on the practicum. However, the practicum may be paid, with a stipend determined by the hiring company.

The full-time tuition rate is charged to students taking 36 or more units in a semester. Moreover, the rates are said to increase by 5% every year, implying that the new students must factor in an equal amount while calculating the fees to be paid.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for admission to Master’s in Machine Learning at CMU, the applicant must meet the following conditions-

  • The applicant must hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Mathematics
  • The student must possess a solid grasp of complex theory and programming skills with experience in R, and Java and Python, along with a solid math background, especially in probability/statistics, linear algebra or calculus
  • The applicant must have an undergraduate overall GPA of a minimum of 3.9 on a 4.0 point scale or 9.6 on a 10.0 point scale
  • The student’s GRE Quantitative score should be a minimum of 169 points broken down as-
    • Verbal: 161 points
    • Analytical Writing: 4.4 
  • Candidates must have scored 111 points in TOEFL
  • The applicant must present 3 Letters of recommendation (2 of which should be from the faculty of your recent institution
  • The student must submit hard copies of official transcripts, and proof of degree completion before the first semester
  • A Statement of Purpose, consisting of a 2-page long essay must be submitted
  • The applicant must present his Resume/CV at the time of application

Admission process & Application Fees

The Machine Learning Department uses the School of Computer Science (SCS) Graduate Online Application procedure. Applications are accepted only once a year. 

Following are the important dates for applying for the Fall 2020 session-

  • Applications open: 20th August 2019
  • Early Application Deadline (with a reduced fee which is $75): 2 December 2019 (noon *EST)
  • Final Application Deadline (at a fee of $125): 12 December 2019 (noon *EST)
  • The results are to be notified in February 2020

(*EST stands for Eastern Standard Time) 

It must be noted that if you need to retake your TOEFL and/or GRE exam, the last date for the same would be 22 November 2019.
