M.Tech in Data Science by IIT Hyderabad is a 36 month(s) Online + Occasional Classroom Interaction program under the Department of Computer Science.

Department of CSE, IIT Hyderabad introduced the MTech (Data Science)(MDS) program in 2018. Students have to do 24 credits of coursework in the first two years. In the third year, they have to do two Capstone projects of 12 credits each. Since it is a self-paced course, the students can take a lesser number of courses in different semesters & complete the course requirement in 2 to 4 years. Students can take the Capstone Projects only after completing the MDS course requirement. If someone is not interested in doing the 24 credits of Capstone projects, they can graduate with the Executive M.Tech. in Data Science degree. MDS is a full MTech Program equivalent to the other MTech programs.

Why pursue the M.Tech. in Data Science Program by IIT Hyderabad?

Many applications, such as healthcare, e-commerce, weather forecast, traffic monitoring, social media, etc., are producing massive amounts of data, with the five “Vs” of Big Data challenges: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value at a large scale. This has led to a huge demand for skilled professionals, known as Data Scientists. Unfortunately, there is a gap between the demand and supply of data scientists. To solve this issue, the CSE Department at IIT Hyderabad proposes a three-year coursework-based M.Tech. program in the Data Science area that is flexible and can be self-paced. This program aims to cater to working individuals’ needs, wherein a candidate has to do eight 3-credit courses over 2-4 years. Ideally, one can take two courses per semester. The institute conducts the classes over the weekends (or other timings suitable for working professionals), with each class having a 3-hour duration.
