The academic year for MSiA students at the university begins in the month of September. It has a sequenced curriculum that deals with Industry Practicum (core subject), along with 4 additional modules, ranging from Introduction to databases, Java/Python Programming to Data mining, Analytics & else.
There is a wide range of electives to choose from, including Reinforcement Learning for Artificial Intelligence, Healthcare Analytics, Predictive Models for Credit Risk Management, Optimization & Heuristics, or Social Networks Analysis. The course offers well-distributed learning through modules & project work that often continues for months, along with an internship opportunity during summers. The course spans across 5 quarters- Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer (compulsory internship with no classes), and a second Fall quarter.
Fees & Scholarship of MSiA
The tuition fee for the course is $18,744 per quarter i.e. INR 13,36,390 (approximately) and is billed on the first invoice for each quarter. It must be noted that there are a total of 5 quarters during the entire course- first fall, winter, spring, summer, and a second fall quarter.
During the summer quarter, students fulfill their required internship and are not billed for tuition. Graduation happens in the month of December, after the second fall quarter.
Additionally, students are required to pay for their health insurance, either through the Northwestern University/Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan or through the student’s own health insurance provider. International students are required to conform to the University’s insurance policies.
While this does look like a huge amount, there’s an option of applying for a scholarship to aid the tuition funding process. Accommodation and living expenses are excluded from the scholarship amount. The college also offers educational loans to students through the Evanston Graduate Financial Aid, on the basis of their demonstrated need, as an alternative way of gaining financial aid.
2 rounds of scholarship take place-
- Priority- Applications submitted for the Priority deadline receive maximum consideration for the scholarship. The deadline to apply for the same is 1st December 2019 by 23.59 CST (Central Standard Time).
- Regular- Applications submitted after this priority deadline are considered under regular deadline scholarships. The deadline for this is 15th January 2020 23.59 CST. However, the applications will be considered depending upon the availability of resources.
Eligibility & Admission Process at MSiA

- Minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale in the undergraduate degree

- A score of 95 in TOEFL or 7.5 in IELTS

While the course doesn’t require a specific specialization, the students pursue their undergraduate studies in quantitative subjects or IT/programming.
Online application for the batch of 2021 commenced on the 1st of September 2019 and will last until 15th January 2020. The results will be announced by the mid of March 2020. Candidates applying for admission to this batch will enter the program Fall of 2020 and graduate in the winter of 2021.
The candidates will receive notifications once the admission decisions are made by the committee by the mid of March. Irrespective of the strata, student applications are accepted from around the world and are assessed purely based on merit.
It must be noted that the admission process of MSiA at Northwestern University is highly selective. The institute selects a batch of only 40 students for each fall quarter.
