The below experience of an interview of admission to PGDBA is written by Shashank Kumar from PGDBA Batch 2015-17.
I was the first person to be interviewed at my center in Mumbai, where about 75 students were shortlisted for the written test and interview for admission to PGDBA. For our batch (2015-2017) both the written test and interview were conducted on the same or on consecutive days. In my case, it was on the same day with about an hour gap in between.
The written test
The written test consisted of 10 questions of Mathematics with multiple choices along with space for the detailed solution, which was also evaluated. Questions were from topics ranging from integration, differentiation, permutations, and combinations, probability, matrices, limits, and algebra, with the level of difficulty of that of a JEE entrance test.
The Interview
Moving on to the interview, the interview panel for admission to PGDBA consisted of 3 professors as interviewers, each from IIMC, IIT KGP and ISI Kolkata. The conversation started with current affairs and the morning news. The professor from IIMC asked me to highlight the most popular news during that time, which lead to the discussion on the Amendment to Land Acquisition Bill passed in 2015. Another professor asked me to describe the most popular and important highlights on the amendment and my opinion on the positive or negative impact that it might have. Then the conversation shifted to my experience and the transition in my career from the one in core VLSI design to Analytics. This lead to the discussion related to my projects in undergrad which were based on image processing, optimization, and nonlinear dynamics.
The Last Step
Finally, the last leg of the interview was focused on technical questions from topics like probability, regression, types of regression like logistic/linear, and types of machine learning algorithms like supervised/unsupervised. Finally, the interviewers questioned me on topics related to the analysis of the goodness of fit based on residual plots. They showed various hand-drawn residual plots and asked me to compare the goodness of fit and explain the issue with the linear fit like heteroscedasticity and non-linear dependence between the dependent and independent variables. I was grilled a little deep in these topics since I had some academic experience with them, which came out during the interview.
Overall, the interview for admission to PGDBA spanned around 15-20 minutes and I received mostly positive feedback on my answers, which was very satisfying.
