Just a few weeks ago, tech giant, Microsoft laid off of dozens of editors and journalists to replace them with AI to curate news and content. The change was applied all across MSN.com, Microsoft News app, and Microsoft Edge newsfeed.
Only a few days had passed that AI had made a folly proving it isn’t any better than humans at journalism.
The robot editor selected an article about Jade Thirlwall, a singer at Little Mix, and her struggle with racism. The AI editors mixed up Thirlwall’s pictures with her bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock. Thirlwall took this incident to Instagram and spoke about it. She called out MSN in her Instagram story for the mix-up between two women of color out of four members of a group.
Since Microsoft had fired all the human journalists and editorial staff, it is clear that the blame goes straight to Microsoft’s Artificially intelligent software.
Is Microsoft’s AI software racially biased? Or was it just a mistake? Since the whole point of deploying AI was to eliminate errors, the journalists lost their jobs for nothing, right? Whatever be the case, one thing is sure that Microsoft’s AI system has some setbacks which need to be addressed soon.
A spokesperson from Microsoft said that the post was removed as soon as the issue came to light.
This brings us to the realization that artificially intelligent robots are not capable of posting or creating any original content. Making a racially biased mistake during a time when #BlackLivesMatter protests are happening does not paint a picture for Microsoft.
