Amid an era with increasing cyber crimes, there is no scope for any mistakes. Facebook invests in automation to identify and address cyber breaches on its many platforms. But adoption of automation has shaken up Facebook’s cybersecurity team, resulting in a displacement of more than 24 people to date.
Employees who deal in the area of cybersecurity alleged that Silicon Valley giant is automating its alert response and security teams and replacing them with machines. But the company’s spokesperson denied these allegations and clarified that they are just restructuring a portion of the team and allocating the people who are affected by this change at places where they can have more impact.
The shift to automation was much needed to tackle the security breaches. Automation allows experts to deal with things that require human expertise.
After the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, for which Zuckerberg faced criticism over “improper sharing” of information of 87million users to profile voters, Zuckerberg announced doubling Facebook’s security staff.
During the times of increasing misinformation and fake news, Facebook has launched a bug bounty program wherein cybersecurity experts get rewarded for identifying and reporting third party apps that access Facebook user data inappropriately.
Automation at Facebook isn’t making is cybersecurity staff redundant, but is improving automated detection of cybercrime at scale so experts can focus where they make the most difference.
