Many IT professionals aim at “automating everything” to eliminate manual and repetitive tasks. But how beneficial it actually is to automate everything? A business must consider possible drawbacks of IT Automation.

IT team usually looks to automate user provisioning and management first. It is done to eliminate the burden associated and reduce the occurrence of common errors. Automated provisioning requires IT admins to enter correct data; otherwise, the automated results might not meet the requirements.

The outset of data creation helps understand the group’s needs and how to control access.

A company might save both time and effort if it automates user account creation and group memberships. The CFO can have easy access and quick access to specific financial data at any time.

But automation isn’t always a sure shot solution to all problems. For instance, the decision to grant access is purely situational. Although the IT team could automate the approval process, Automation of the request isn’t possible. It is suggested to separate the request into a) access rights users need when they start the job b) access rights users might require down the line. This streamlines the user creation process, allowing users to access, audit, and provide accurate information.

Automated user provisioning and management process should be auditable, i.e., it requires human oversight. When IT creates a user, all necessary parties should be notified about the user’s details. Human intervention is required to cross-check the information in case of any discrepancies and be resolved. Some areas of user provisioning can’t be automated, and that is for good only. Based on this knowledge, a company can shape its future technology decisions.
