Adding to the many AI-related acquisitions made in recent years, Apple acquired Ontario-based machine learning start-up Inductiv Inc.Apple didn’t disclose the purpose or plan for the acquisition but states that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time.”
The Canadian start-up, Inductive Inc, co-founded by professors from the University of Wisconsin, Stanford University, and the University of Waterloo, has developed technology that uses AI to automate the task of finding and rectifying those errors. Cleaner data enables ML to improve the software with minimal human intervention. The company is working with Apple on its ML and Data Science projects and Siri, Apple’s voice assistant.
The Apple executive, John Giannandrea, in charge of machine learning and Siri, has been working on upgrading the underlying technology behind Apple’s AI-powered products and Siri.
Apple is currently working to make Siri a stronger competitor to Alexa and Google assistant, which are popular virtual assistants on the market.
Apple has bought various other AI and data companies such as Xnor.ai, Tuplejump, Turi, Laserlike, and Perceptio. Apple has also acquired Voysis to boost Siri’s speech recognition, NextVr (virtual reality start-up), and the popular iPhone weather app Dark Sky.
