China’s state news agency reveals its first 3D AI-powered news anchor, Xin Xiaowei, which replicates a human journalist’s looks and actions with state-of-the-art technology.
The virtual female presenter has smooth mobility and can display complex facial expressions.
Xinhua, along with Sogou, a Chinese web search specialist company, developed the uncanny avatar. Zhao Wanwei, the reporter who covers current affairs for the news agency, was the model behind the framing of the avatar.
Hundreds of cameras trace the movements and expressions of the human reporter who wears a data collecting helmet. This data lays the basis for the virtual presenter.
Xinhua launched four 2D digital newsreaders and the first AI anchor in 2018 before Xin. The first digital presenter, Qiu Has (2D), used machine learning to mimic human broadcasters to stimulate gestures, voices, and facial movements.#
Xinhua also gifted Russia with a Russian-speaking virtual presenter on Russia’s and China’s diplomatic relations anniversary.
The lifelike virtual presenter can present while standing, sitting, or walking around and can change hairstyles and clothes.
Xinhua hopes to include an improved and updates Xin in more news scenarios. The company aims to create a new and dynamic experience for the audience with Xin.
