How wonderful it would be if AI could infer people’s personalities from their selfies. Russian researchers from Open University for the Humanities and Economics and HSE University presented AI that can judge people’s character from photographs even better than human raters.

In the article “Assessing the Big Five personality traits using real-life static face images,’ the researchers have made predictions based on facial appearance. The report, published in Scientific Reports, noticed that the predictions are more reliable in females than in males.
One can use this technology to find the “perfect match” in dating, customer service, or online tutoring.

The researchers have collaborated with BestFitMe, a Russian-British business start-up, to train AI to make personality predictions. AI was able to judge the following five personality traits:

  • Conscientiousness
  • Neuroticism
  • Extraversion
  • Agreeableness
  • Openness

The research was based on a sample of 12 thousand volunteers who submitted a personality trait-measuring questionnaire based on the Big Five model, including about 31 thousand selfies.

Out of all the five traits, conscientiousness was more easily recognizable.

The technology can help provide products and services best suited for the customer’s personality, giving them a personalized experience.
