Elon Musk, the billionaire Technical titan, has repeatedly warned that AI will soon become as smart as humans and is a significant risk to the existence of human civilization.
Many AI researchers believe that Musk’s comments are highly inappropriate, reported CNBC. Facebook head of AI, Jerome Pesenti, slammed Musk over his understating of AI, only to distract people from real issues.
Pesenti tweeted that many people from the AI community would agree with him when he says that Musk has an idea of what he is talking about when he talks about AI. Pesenti also told that AI is nowhere near matching human intelligence and that there is no such thing as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
There are risks related to AI, but Musk is talking about the wrong ones. The challenges AI is facing is around fairness and not about risks regarding machines taking over.
Musk talked about the progress of AI would soon make AI an “immortal dictator,” and there will be no escape for humans.
Pesenti believes that these misconceptions revolving around AGI are drowning the real concerns from reaching broader awareness. An AI executive says that a large portion of the community believes that Musk is a harmful distraction.
Musk has always been an AI critic and claims that AI has many more risks than the risk posed by North Korea.
In a public spat with Mark Zuckerberg, Musk said that Zuckerberg’s understanding of AI is limited. Zuckerberg responded to this saying creating doomsday scenarios is just downright negative and irresponsible.
AI Community is right on its part to openly disagree with Musk’s loose remarks about AI, given his popularity might lead to the general public’s unrealistic understanding of the state of AI maturity and deviate from the actual concerns faced in the AI community.
