Wondering how will your MBA (Analytics) by IIM Kashipur Interview Experience be like and stressing about it? We have got what you need.

Here’s Gaurav, who recently appeared for the MBA (Analytics) by IIM Kashipur Interview sharing his experience with AI Monks. Read on to have a better understanding of how things might go in there.

Name: Gaurav

Academic background: Engineering degree in Production Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. (Batch of 2016).

Professional background: Oracle Corp as a Database Administrator.

Name of the Course: MBA (Analytics) Program by IIM Kashipur.

Venue for interview: IIM Kashipur.

Ques. Why did you choose the MBA (Analytics) program offered by IIM Kashipur?

Nothing in particular. I appeared through CAT, and since I was already interested in Business Analytics, I also applied for this program and PGPBA program by IIM Bangalore. It’s just that my interests in analytics brought me here.

Ques. What instigated the transition from Engineering to Business Analytics?

In my engineering days, statistics and quantitative methods were already a part of our curriculum, and I always took an interest in them. I had also submitted a paper on quantitative methods.

Now, when I started working with the Oracle, I started exploring different basics of analytics. I learned Python and Trigon and a few other basic algorithms. So gradually, I started developing this deep interest in analytics.

Apart from that, if we look at the current situation, possessing business analytics skills can help you make a mark in the industry. Hence, I shifted to analytics.

Ques. How many applicants were there, according to you?

I registered for the program in the final few days. By guessing from my registration number, there were more than a thousand applicants for the interview.

Ques. How many of them appeared for the actual interview?

Around 60 to 70% of the total applicants came for the interview. I guess most of the applicants changed their minds and moved to some other course.

I am guessing this because, on the day of my interview, I got a call in the morning that it has been preponed to 3-4 hours. So some people might have backed out from the interview.

Ques. What kind of questions did the interviewers ask you during your interview?

I was mostly asked subject related questions. My profile mentioned that I had studied industrial statistics, so they asked questions on that. Other than that, the questions they asked were –

Why would you choose Business Analytics?

Explain with examples the difference between independent and exhaustive events.

Do you have any experience in Business Analytics?

Do you follow current affairs?

What do you know about industrial statistics? Why is it called that?

What is the probability of picking an ace of spades from a deck of 52 cards?

How do you measure the accuracy of the model?

Ques. You mentioned appearing through CAT. What was the scope percentile through CAT? And, do you have any idea about the current cutoff?

The scope was 95%. The interviewing committee was calculating the composite score based on the entire profile. Also, the cutoff for that was 44 out of 80 marks.

Ques. How did you prepare for your interview? Any resources you used that you would like to suggest for the interview preparation?

I didn’t prepare anything separate for the interview. I had read a few books on Business Statistics.

Another thing that helped me was that my basics of analytics, statistics, probability, random variables, etc., were clear. For that, any good textbook on statistics will help.

Ques. Any advice or suggestions for future applicants for the program?

Based on my personal experience and some other interviews, the interviewing committee mostly asks subject related questions. Moreover, having command on the basics of analytics, probability, and statistics would really help the candidates prepare for their interviews.

So, we hope Gaurav’s MBA Analytics IIM Kashipur interview experience would help you prepare for your interview.

Have you been thinking about the MBA Analytics, IIM Kashipur, interview experience and dreading it? Are you still unaware of the requirements and process of the interview? Don’t worry, we’ve got your back!

Given below is a small chat we had with Prateek, wherein he shared with us his MBA Analytics IIM Kashipur interview experience that he had recently appeared for. Read further to understand better what it is like to be interviewed for such a program.

Name: Prateek

Academic Background: Completed bachelor’s in Electronics and Telecommunity from the University of Mumbai (MU), in 2019.

Professional Background: Worked with Cartesian Consulting Agency for a year.

Name of the Course: MBA (Analytics) program by IIM Kashipur.

Ques. Why did you choose the MBA (Analytics) Program by IIM Kashipur?

I’ve always wanted to establish a career in the Analytic domain. With this course offering precisely that, I knew it was for me. I had gone through the curriculum, which stated the first-year to be current MBA study and the second-year to have a little emphasis on Analytics. Hence, I found this program a great fit for me.

Ques. A rough guess on how many people applied for the course and how many appeared for the interview?

There were around 2,000 applicants out of which approximately 250-300 people were shortlisted for the interview. There are 40 seats available for the program.

Ques. Out of the options available, which exam did you choose to apply through for the course? What was your score?

There are three exams through which one can apply for the MBA (Analytics) program: CAT, GRE, and GMAT. I had recently appeared in CAT, and hence, I chose to apply through it.

My CAT score was 90%.

Ques. What questions were asked to you by the interviewing panel? How many interviewers were there, and what were their backgrounds? Did they ask you any questions regarding statistics or ML?

My interview took place a day after the cyclone Nisarga had hit Maharashtra. Since it was an online interview, I was asked basic general awareness questions like:

Where do you live in Mumbai?

How can you use analytics to determine the effects of COVID19 on the Goregaon Film Industry?

If you were the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, how would you handle the COVID19 situation of the state?

What are your unique skill subjects?

What is the difference between a multiplexer and decoder? Draw a diagram to explain.

The panel that interviewed me consisted of 2 professors from IIM Kashipur. No, they did not ask questions about statistics or ML but they asked questions from my engineering background. They mostly asked questions based on the profile I had shared.

Ques. Do you have any idea about the cutoff for the MBA (Analytics) program by IIM Kashipur?

Yes, the cutoff for the interview was 44 out of 80 for the general category. For the other categories, it was at least 5 marks less. There was no cutoff for the st category. There was a separate weightage for women and non-engineers.

The panel would calculate a composite score based on your profile. It is a mixture of your CAT, GRE, and GMAT score, your graduation percentage and 10th and 12th percentage. They would also add your work experience if you have any.

Other than that, there is no specific preparation required for the interview.

Ques. How did you prepare for the interview?

AI Monks had helped me a lot by providing the notes for the PGDBA programs. I also did some research from google as the interviewers usually ask questions about the current position of the Data Analytics field and check our general knowledge.

Ques. Any suggestions that you would like to give to the people who would like to apply for the program in the future?

In my opinion, it would be better if one applies through GRE or GMAT instead of CAT. There are more chances of scoring high marks through GRE than CAT. The interviewers would most likely ask questions from your background and on current affairs and essential general trivia. Having command over them would help you ace the interview.

We hope Prateek’s MBA Analytics IIM Kashipur interview experience would help you prepare for your interview.

If you need further guidance about the course and/or the admission procedure, etc., quickly write to us info@aimonks.com or visit AI Monks.

The increased demand in the industry of analytics acts as a bait to the aspiring candidates, mostly engineers. However, consider the fact that increased demand for a course is directly proportional to the number of seats and/or difficulty in the admission procedure. Hence, you must buckle up and prepare hard to achieve your goal.

To help you with your struggle through the interview for PGDBA, one of the PGDBA 2019 aspirants, Harshit Goel shared his experience with us. Read his experience and check out how AI Monks helped him during his admission to PGDBA.

Name: Harshit Garg

Current Designation: SAS Grid Admin

Current Organization: Barclays

Work Experience: 18 months

Your interview location: Mumbai

Your panel (number of interviewers/their background):

My panel had 3 interviewers, but don’t know about their backgrounds.

How was your interview?

My interview was very short; it lasted for only around 8-10 mins.

The first question that the panel asked me in my interview for PGDBA was about my job profile. One of the panellists checked my documents and read that I had studied Stochastic process in my undergraduate, so he gave me a question to solve on a whiteboard, along with a few follow up questions. Then the last question was about Brexit. Overall for me, the interview was a fun round.

What technical questions (related to analytics/machine learning) the panel ask?

No, the panel did not ask any technical questions in my interview for PGDBA.

What mathematics/statistics questions the panel asked?

2-3 questions on Transition Matrix and absorbing state.

Did the panel ask you questions on general awareness or general knowledge?

Yeah, the panel asked me questions about Brexit and what options Britain had for Brexit.

Did you feel that your interview was a stress interview?

No, it was rather fun for me.

How did you prepare for the entire process- written exam, application, and interview?

For the written exam, I was well versed with mathematics, and the WhatsApp group study helped a lot and for English, I prepared Para Jumbles and Word meaning from a book.

In application, there was nothing to be worried about; they just asked about my career goals.

For the interview, AI Monk conducted a mock interview which gave me a good idea about how the interview was going to be and helped me prepare on the back of feedback of the mock.

If you were following AI Monks during the preparation, did you feel AI Monks was useful at any point in time?

Yes, it was very much useful for mocks as they provided many suggestions about the same.

As a suggestion, there can be improvements in preparation for the written exam- posting the questions daily will definitely help the students prepare in a better way. However, it is voluntary, so even encouraging students to discuss on the social media groups is enough.

We hope this interview experience helped you reach one step closer to your goal.

However, if you still have any queries, you can reach out to us at info@aimonks.com.

Heading towards your Interview for PGDBA? Below is a questionnaire filled for you by Mr. Harikrishnan M B.

Read his experience at the interview for PGDBA 2019 and then think of what answers you would have given if you were in his shoes.

Name: Harikrishnan M B

Current Designation: Associate Analyst (Data Analytics)

Current Organization: EY GDS

Your interview location: Bengaluru

Your panel (number of interviewers/their background):

P1(ISI) P2(IIT) P3(IIM)

How was your interview?

It was longer than average as I was the first candidate for the morning session. They started out by asking me to introduce myself and further asked me why I was going for PGDBA, even though I was already working in Analytics. The interviewers later moved on to other topics. There were more questions related to academics than I expected but it was a balanced interview.

The panel was chill and appeared indifferent.

What technical questions (related to analytics/machine learning) the panel asked?

The following technical questions were asked-

1: “What are the KPI you use in your visualization project? What have you done in Advanced Analytics?”

2: “What do you mean by clustering in ML? What is unsupervised ML? What do you mean by labelled and unlabelled data?”

What mathematics/statistics questions the panel asked?

The following questions in mathematics/statistics were asked-

1: “Write the exponential function as a polynomial.”

2: “Do you know about the correlation coefficient? Explain.”

3: “What is the null hypothesis? Why is it called the null hypothesis? What is p-value and what is its use?”

4: “Solve (x^2 -3x +5)^(x-4) = 1″

What academics questions did your panel ask?

Panel asked the following academic questions-

1: Favourite subject in engineering? What is Reynold’s number? Give its expression and the value at which flow transitions

2: Do you know Manning’s coefficient? What is Chezy’s formula?

3: What is Bernoulli’s equation? Name its components

4: Second law of thermodynamics?

5: How does knocking occur in IC engines? How do we determine if the fuel has anti-knock properties?

Did the panel ask you questions on general awareness or general knowledge?

Yes. The panel asked: “Do you follow politics? Isn’t politics propagated through social media bad? Do you know about an echo chamber? Compare an echo chamber to politics propagated in social media.”

Did you feel that your interview was a stress interview?

No, it wasn’t.

How did you prepare for the entire process – written exam, application, and interview?

Written Exam – Had been preparing for CAT at the same. Studied +1,+2 NCERT texts.

Application and PI – Prepared alongside IIM calls. Read upon previous PI experiences and prepared HR questions. Studied expected math topics and basics of one grad subject.

Knew Analytics and ML due to my work background.

If you were following AI Monks during the preparation, did you feel AI Monks was useful at any point in time?

I didn’t follow AI Monks, but I am sure that if I had, it would have been of more benefit to me while preparing for the interview for PGDBA.

PGDBA Interview Experience: We met a few PGDBA 2019 applicants and asked them to answer a few questions related to their PGDBA Interview. The questions were related to the admission process and their whole experience of admission procedure.
Given below are the questions and answers that will definitely solve a number of your queries related to the interview.

Name: Nishant Kumar

Current Designation: Software Engineer

Current Organization: Saggezza

Your interview location: Bengaluru

How many people were there at your interview location? (Rough estimate):

Day 1, Slot2. Around 20 People

What was your score based on the answer key released by IIT Kgp?

132

Your panel (number of interviewers/their background):

B1, 3 Interviewers, 1 from each college.

How was your interview?

My interview for PGDBA started with a basic introduction & then the panel asked a few questions about my college. Turned out the professor was from IIT KGP, my alma mater. They made some snappy comments about the negative gradient about my grades, which I accepted as my prepared answer was useless since the professor was from my college.

The IIM Guy said that he remembered me from last year’s interview (don’t know how) and asked what went wrong then.

After that, they moved to questions in mathematics. In a nutshell, my PGDBA interview experience was not as I expected it to be.

What technical questions (related to analytics/machine learning) the panel asked?

The panel asked questions about what domain I was working in & if I knew R & Python. No deep delving in technical questions as I was not from an analytics background.

What mathematics/statistics questions the panel asked?

The panel asked questions about the normal distribution & poisons distribution, along with Binomial expansions when I couldn’t define Poison distribution with confidence.

Conditional probability

The professor from IIT Kgp then handed over the bat on to the professor from ISI and asked him to ask more questions. He then asked me a series of aptitude questions. Some which I could remember are as follows-

Define a polynomial. Write a polynomial that is always equal to e^x. (Answer- none)

Given a square of side 2, prove that if 5 points are randomly placed in it, there will be at least 2 points, whose distance will be less than root(2).

Few more similar questions, which didn’t require many mathematical skills but just the presence of mind.

Did the panel ask you questions on general awareness or general knowledge?

The last time when I attended the interview for PGDBA, I was asked all the math questions in the interview, but I couldn’t answer finance questions. So, maybe they spared me the pain this time.

Did you feel that your interview was a stress interview?

No

How did you prepare for the entire process – written exam, application, and interview?

For the Written exam- I went on the back of my CAT prep & revised 11th & 12th mathematics at the last moment.

For the Interview- Prepared prob & stats thoroughly with some other courses including Linear Algebra as I was from maths Background.

Suggestion- Prepare for basic finance & economics terms too, was asked to me last year.

If you were following AI Monks during the preparation, did you feel AI Monks was useful at any point in time?

Past interview experiences provided me with a direction in which I should focus my interview, which was way different than the typical MBA interview I had prepared until then. The mock interview was to the point for most people, though I couldn’t attend one due to constraints. AIMonks is, however, a nice initiative which will definitely help the deserving candidates get through the admission process without much hustle.

Admission to PGDBA is not just an option but the only dream for many.

Written below are the words of Dhrubjyoti Dutta, an ex-student at PGDBA (2016-18), IIM Calcutta. Read his experience about how he established his dream of getting into IIM C. As a result, he further landed up with one of the best decisions of his life- completing his post-graduation in Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics.

With the zeal of getting admission into IIM A, B & C, I attempted CAT in my final year of graduation. But resulting in sheer disappointment, I could not score enough to get a call from any of the three premium institutes. My eager beaver nature propelled me to try again. After graduating as a Chemical Engineer, I joined one of the PSU IOCL as a graduate engineer trainee and continued my preparation for CAT during my unbound time. Improving my previous score, I was eligible for admission to other premium B-Schools like FMS, XLRI, IIM-L, K, I, etc. but could not land into any of the IIMs.

Admission to PGDBA- A Dream

IIM C was always known for its innovation and capturing the market trend in engendering business leaders. My sussed instinct helped me to grab the opportunity to move from the old-age oil industry to the 21st-century oil industry i.e. onset of data-driven decision making where data is termed as the new oil. To produce leaders in the era of IT, IIM C had introduced PG in Computing Management. To grab the latest industry trend of Data Science, which IIM C offered PG in Business Analytics in collaboration with two other premium institutes in their domain, naming IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata.

The Preparation

I started my preparation in January for admission to PGDBA with the basic 11th & 12th NCERT mathematics textbooks. Then, I referred to my old IIT-JEE coaching institute’s study material for question practising and deepening of concepts. As I was already preparing for CAT, my verbal, critical reasoning, reading, data interpretation & logical reasoning did not seem much of an issue. In the exam, I attempted a decent number of questions i.e. around 43-45 out of 50 questions. Finally, I cleared the written exam and received an interview call.

The Interview

In the interview, I was introduced to three professors one from each institute where they tested me on my logics. The interview did not demand prior knowledge of analytics or any related work experience as such. Questions put forward by the professors were answerable through logic and even professors helped me with clues.

Finally, I was able to crack the interview and get admission to PGDBA. I chose this course over MBA from IIM L, K, I, XLRI & FMS. After completing my degree, it gave me a sense of gratification in my then taken decision of pursuing Analytics. The courses were quite new and different from my prior studies and experiences. However, the professors assured a smooth transition and helped me with the basics to advance analytics and business knowledge to suffice in the competitive corporate world.

Given below is the interview experience of Khushiram Sharma, PGDBA alum from 2016-18 batch.

I hail from a very beautiful city of Ajmer in Rajasthan. I completed my schooling from DAV Centenary Public School and later got admission in IIT (BHU) Varanasi in 2009 and graduated from there in 2013. After graduating as a Mechanical Engineer, I joined BPCL in May 2013 as a management trainee. I worked in the capacity of Retail Engineer (Ludhiana) and Assistant Manager Operations (Gorakhpur) during my tenure of 3 years.

During my stay in Gorakhpur, I was sharing a flat with my immediate college senior (currently pursuing MBA from Duke University, USA). He introduced me to the field of analytics and data science which was predicted to have a promising future. I got to know about PGDBA from a college friend who joined BPCL with me. Interestingly, he got admission both in the first batch of PGDBA as well as MS in Data Science from Cincinnati University, USA. In 2015, he chose the latter one but motivated me enough to try for PGDBA in 2016.

The Written Test

In 2016, a separate examination was conducted by IIT Kharagpur, thus alienating the admission criteria from CAT. This examination had fifty percent weightage for math which comprises a similar syllabus as that of the 12th standard. I prepared from 11th and 12th standard NCERT books only for the math portion only. This entrance test checks the conceptual knowledge in the quantitative field rather than speed which is the case with CAT. Verbal ability, data interpretation, and logical reasoning can be prepared from any test series being offered for CAT (difficulty level for PGDBA entrance was lower).

The Interview at Admission to PGDBA

During my interview for PGDBA, I was asked to briefly explain my profile of work for the entire duration i.e. from 2013 to 2016. As I had been to many places during this time and the last one being Gorakhpur (UP), they picked a question from there. They asked me to give five cultural differences between UP & Rajasthan (I am from Ajmer), and also explain how they were different. They stopped me when I had explained four of them convincingly. There was no question from statistics. On the mathematics front, they created a problem like this: “We have identified four places in Rajasthan to be made headquarters of education for the state. Out of these, we must finally select only three based on the distances need to be travelled by people in the future. All other conditions will remain the same for all places.” Given this, before jumping on any solution, I discussed further assumptions like population density, if I could assume a shape as per my drawing if people would travel to their nearest headquarter (as per straight line distance).

Finally, they said that all other conditions would remain the same for all places. After trying for 2 minutes, they made the problem a little bit easier for me. I had three locations and must select two of them. Now, I drew circumcenter/perpendicular bisectors of this triangle and then explained the solution. They asked me if I knew any coding. To which, I said,” primarily no, except that I studied C 6 years back in the 2nd Semester.” Then they asked to write a code for printing my name (string) in reverse order, that I did.

This sums up me and my admission to PGDBA, a unique, new and promising career opportunity.

The below experience of an interview of admission to PGDBA is written by Shashank Kumar from PGDBA Batch 2015-17.

I was the first person to be interviewed at my center in Mumbai, where about 75 students were shortlisted for the written test and interview for admission to PGDBA. For our batch (2015-2017) both the written test and interview were conducted on the same or on consecutive days. In my case, it was on the same day with about an hour gap in between.

The written test

The written test consisted of 10 questions of Mathematics with multiple choices along with space for the detailed solution, which was also evaluated. Questions were from topics ranging from integration, differentiation, permutations, and combinations, probability, matrices, limits, and algebra, with the level of difficulty of that of a JEE entrance test.

The Interview

Moving on to the interview, the interview panel for admission to PGDBA consisted of 3 professors as interviewers, each from IIMC, IIT KGP and ISI Kolkata. The conversation started with current affairs and the morning news. The professor from IIMC asked me to highlight the most popular news during that time, which lead to the discussion on the Amendment to Land Acquisition Bill passed in 2015. Another professor asked me to describe the most popular and important highlights on the amendment and my opinion on the positive or negative impact that it might have. Then the conversation shifted to my experience and the transition in my career from the one in core VLSI design to Analytics. This lead to the discussion related to my projects in undergrad which were based on image processing, optimization, and nonlinear dynamics.

The Last Step

Finally, the last leg of the interview was focused on technical questions from topics like probability, regression, types of regression like logistic/linear, and types of machine learning algorithms like supervised/unsupervised. Finally, the interviewers questioned me on topics related to the analysis of the goodness of fit based on residual plots. They showed various hand-drawn residual plots and asked me to compare the goodness of fit and explain the issue with the linear fit like heteroscedasticity and non-linear dependence between the dependent and independent variables. I was grilled a little deep in these topics since I had some academic experience with them, which came out during the interview.

Overall, the interview for admission to PGDBA spanned around 15-20 minutes and I received mostly positive feedback on my answers, which was very satisfying.

Keep checking the space at AIMonks for more updates about admissions and updates related to PGDBA.
