With Lockdown 4.0 in practice, the government has lifted the ban from traveling via Railways. But to keep the spread of COVID-19 in control, the Ministry of Railways has instructed the General Managers ( Zonal Railways & Production Units) to install thermal screening facilities at production units and workshops.
RailTel also proposed the installation of an AI-powered thermal screening facility at major railway stations. The ministry believes that the practical solution would be to identify the virus carriers.
RailTel wrote a note to Indian Railways emphasizing on the need to enforce long term screening and social distancing measures until the discovery of an effective vaccine.
The effective AI-powered screeners can differ between an actual fever and heat from hot coffee or some beverage.
In the view of the pandemic, it is essential to scan every individual that walks into the railway premises. The zero contact facility takes just a second to capture the temperature. The scanner also serves the purpose of a metal detector.
A senior railway officer shared that since work has already commenced at coach making facilities, RailTel also proposed installation of these systems at facilities like Modern Coach Factory (Rae Bareli), Integral Coach Factory (Chennai), Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala), other factories, workshops, loco-sheds, and the likes. Since it is crucial to identify passengers with fever and other COVID-19 symptoms, the facility will be installed at originating points of trains and major railway stations en route, too.
